The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Program at ACH-PR was developed and has been in place since April of 2012. With the addition of practicing NNPs, we have been able to decrease the number of clinical attending neonatologists (FTEs) in the neonatal intensive care unit. In addition, the NNPs also provide coverage for the neonatology fellow’s and pediatric resident’s “uncovered slots” as a result of the resident’s duty hour restrictions mandated by Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education.
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is a vital member of the neonatal intensive care team. Their primary responsibility is the management of noncritical and critically ill neonatal patients in the intensive care setting. The NNP has specialized skill and knowledge related to the NICU setting. Clinical functions include: performing physical exams, history investigation, medical record documentation and entry, conducting approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory & diagnostic studies and professional consultations, prescribing medications, and providing direct patient care in collaboration with the designated supervising physician or back-up attending physician(s). In addition to contributing to excellence in patient and family-centered care, the NPP participates in teaching, precepting, quality improvement initiatives, research, and provides leadership to the organization and medical profession.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s standard hours of operations are 24/7 Approximately 600 yearly admissions to the NICU. Average daily NICU census 43 patients.
The NNP will provide in house coverage at the ACH-PR NICU in collaboration with the designated supervising physician or back-up attending physician(s).Coverage hours are outlined above and include a combination of 6, 9,17, and 24 hour shifts during weekdays, weekends, weeknights, weekend nights, and some holidays.
