Special Care Nursery RNs care for newborn babies who are delivered pre-term (neonates) or at-term newborns who experience complications at time of birth. The SCN provides intensive around-the-clock care, including both medicals needs and basic daily care activities. SCN Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of best practices.
In addition to basic nursing care, SCN Nurses responsibilities include (but are not limited to) •Cares for infants transitioning to extra uterine life •Provides age and culturally appropriate care to patient •Consults and coordinates with health team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans •Provides nutritional assessment and specialized feedings •Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IV •Provides arterials and intravenous therapy •Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, suchs as ventilators and incubators •Prepares, administers and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments •Monitors vital signs and initiates corrective actions when the patient displays adverse symptoms; communicates to the healthcare team •Assists physician during examinations, treatments and procedures which could include life-saving situations •Instructs and educates newborns’ families •Participates in discharge planning •Documents care accurately and in a timely manner utilizing EMR •Performs other duties as assigned
BSN preferred or working toward BSN •National certification in related specialty area preferred or national specialty certification obtained within 12 months of employment •1-3 years minimum experience working in Womens’ Health Services, Labor and Delivery, Neonatal Nursing. Preferred 1 year Neonatal ICU experience •Knowledge of labor, delivery, postpartum and nursery care essentials •Must know principles and practice of sterile technique and infection prevention •Skilled in technical aspects of mother/infant care •Able to perform effectively in stressful situations •Able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people and departments •Excellent communication skills •Basic computer skills and use of EMR •Active RN license State of Ohio •Current Basic Life Support •Preferred PALS or obtain within one year •Preferred NRP or obtain within 90 days
